Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens or Sabal serrulata) is a dwarf palm plant native to North America. It primarily grows along the Atlantic coast in Georgia and Florida. The active ingredients are believed to be found in the plant's brown-black berries.
Saw palmetto was a popular folk remedy used by Native Americans to treat urinary conditions in men and breast disorders in women.
It has become an accepted treatment for symptoms associated with benign prostate gland enlargement (called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH) in many parts of Europe and in New Zealand. In North America, saw palmetto is considered an alternative herbal remedy for BPH.
Saw palmetto is also popular as an herbal remedy for a type of hair loss and baldness called androgenic alopecia, or male- and female-pattern baldness. This type of hair loss is typically the greatest at the top of the head or around the temples.
Although we still don't know exactly how it works, it's believed that it may block an enzyme (5-alpha-reductase) from allowing the hormone testosterone from being converted to another hormone, dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone is considered a key contributing factor to the onset and progression of androgenic alopecia and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Saw palmetto has also been found to affect the levels of sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen in other ways.
Much of saw palmetto's popularity as a remedy for hair loss and baldness, however, is based on how it's believed to work rather than on evidence that it actually does. Although there have been some lab studies showing that saw palmetto can inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, there are no well-designed clinical studies showing that saw palmetto can cause hair growth, or stop hair loss or baldness from progressing. One of the only published trials on saw palmetto for baldness is a small study involving 10 men with mild to moderate male pattern baldness. Although promising, the study was too small to provide meaningful evidence.
Like most other herbal supplements, saw palmetto has potential side effects. The most common side effects associated with saw palmetto use are mild stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and bad breath. Some men taking saw palmetto have reported erectile dysfunction, breast tenderness or enlargement, and changes in sexual desire.
There have been rare case reports describing liver inflammation, pancreatitis, jaundice, headache, dizziness, insomnia, depression, breathing difficulties, muscle pain, high blood pressure, chest pain, abnormal heart rhythm, blood clots, and heart disease, but it's not clear that these side effects were directly caused by saw palmetto.
Although it hasn't been well-demonstrated in humans, saw palmetto may influence levels of sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. Until we know more, people with hormone-sensitive conditions, such as breast cancer, should use caution. Also, saw palmetto could theoretically interfere with oral contraceptives and hormone therapy.
At least two case reports have linked saw palmetto with severe bleeding. People with bleeding disorders or who are taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications ("blood-thinners")--such as warfarin (Coumadin), aspirin, or clopidogrel (Plavix)--should avoid taking saw palmetto unless under medical supervision. It should also be avoided at least two weeks before and after surgery.
The safety of saw palmetto for pregnant or nursing women, children, or people with kidney or liver disease hasn't been established.

και παλι δεν πιστευω πως μπορει να κανει κατι
το χρησιμοποιησα και με αλλα συστατικα αλλα και μεσα στην μινοξιδιλη
τεσπα αν το πιστευεις εσυ εμενα μου περισσευει που λενε
ναι φιλε τα εχω διαβασει αυτα
και παλι δεν πιστευω πως μπορει να κανει κατι

Αν θυμάμαι καλά, μπλοκάρει την DHT αφού δημιουργηθεί και δεν μπλοκάρει το ένζυμο που είναι υπεύθυνο για την δημιουργία της, με αποτέλεσμα να δημιουργείτε κανονικά στον θύλακα.
Δυστυχώς, δεν κάνει τίποτα εκτός από sides.

Nα δειτε αν εχει πεσει το επιπεδο της DHT και σε τι φαση ειναι η τεστοστερονη να μας στηλετε και εμας τα αποτελεσματα?
Απλα πραγματα! Αλλα δεν!!! ΜΑλλον δεν κανει τιποτα! Οπως και πολλα αλλα βοτανα τα οποια πιστευω ειναι λιγο πολυ προπαγανδα απο εμπορους παραγωγους κτλπ...

PROSCAR COMPARISON STUDY (1994)
This study involved a total of 32 healthy male volunteers age 20 to 30 years old in a 1-week open, randomized, placebo-controlled trial comparing finasteride (Proscar) and Permixon, the plant extract of Serenoa repens. This study's intention was to determine the effectiveness of single and multiple doses of the drugs on the inhibition of 5a-reductase as measured by serum dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels. After taking baseline measurements on day 1, 10 volunteers randomly received finasteride 5 mg once daily,11 received Permixone 160 mg twice daily, and 11 received placebo once daily for 7 days. Serum testosterone and DHT levels were taken at 12, 24, 48, 72,120, and 168 hours following baseline measurements. Following a single dose of finasteride 5 mg, serum DHT levels were reduced by 65% from baseline at 12 hours. This extent of decrease remained constant throughout the seven days. Permixone and placebo caused no significant reductions in DHT over the seven days. Serum testosterone levels remained within the normal limits over the seven days of the study with all three groups. The effect seen with finasteride therapy supports its efficacy as an inhibitor of 5a-reductase. The lack of effect of Permixone on DHT levels does not support its hypothesis of a prostatic mechanism of action involving 5a-reductase inhibition.

Saw Palmetto: It's not an Alternative to Propecia
Saw Palmetto is not a "natural alternative to Propecia". There are two types of 5 alpha reductase that combine with Testosterone to form DHT. Propecia blocks one of them most effectively, reduces serum (blood stream) DHT levels, and has shown to stop hair loss in 83% of men. Well what about Saw Palmetto? It actually has been shown to block both types of DHT, and this is where all the confusion centers. Just because something can block DHT in a test tube, does not mean it can reduce levels of it in the bloodstream, or stop hair loss. In a clinical study, Saw Palmetto was given to test subjects, and it had no effect on their serum DHT levels. This means it didn't inhibit DHT in the bloodstream effectively like Propecia does. This is the key. As a result of this study, many have hypothesized that Saw Palmetto works for the prostate by some other mechanism than DHT reduction. Propecia and Saw Palmetto are similar in some ways, but completely different where it matters most. As such, they should never be considered "alternatives" to each other.

το βιβλιαρακι του spectral dnc-l λεει οτι το saw palmetto που εχει μεσα στα συστατικα του εχει παρομοια δραση με το ναρκωτικο φιναστεριδη? γιατι το λεει αυτο? για να πουλησει το κανει? κι αν το κανει για να πουλησει τοτε γιατι δεν εβαλε λιωμενη φιναστεριδη στα συστατικα απο τη στιγμη που θα ηταν τοπικη η εφαρμογη της? ισως και να θεωρησαν οτι η φινα δεν παει στην ιδια λοσιον με την μινοξ? ισως ειναι ακριβοτερη η φινα απτο παλμεττο ωστε τους συνεφερε οικονομικα να βαλουνε μεσα παλμετο? θελω να πω....γιατι να μην πιστεψουμε αυτους που καθισαν και φτιαξανε μια φορμουλα συγχρονη με 5% μινοξιδιλη μεσα και αλλα πολυτιμα για τα μαλλια και να πιστεψουμε κειμενακια απτο ιντερνετ που δεν εκθειαζουν το παλμετο? το σωστοτερο ειναι καποιος να παρει ενα μηνα φινα και να κανει εξετασεις μετα να παρει ενα μηνα παλμετο και να κανει εξετασεις και στο τελος να συγκρινει τα αποτελεσματα..αλλιως μιλαμε ολοι πολυ θεωρητικα....αν η φιναστεριδη ηταν φυτικη θα την εκανα ληψη με τα χιλια.....τωρα τη φοβαμαι λιγακι (ισως να ειναι και βλακεια ο φοβος μου αυτος αλλα τι να κανουμε)..οποιος πιστευει στη φινα ας παρει φινα..δε θα υποβαθμισω ενα δοκιμασμενο υλικο για το οποιο εχουν γινει και ερευνες που δειχνουν οτι βοηθαει
